U.S. Donor Conceived Council Statement in Response to “What Makes Family? Advocates Debate Importance of Biological Ties,” The Wall Street Journal, June 25, 2023

June 25, 2023 — Donor conceived adults should have full autonomy to decide what, if any, value they place on genetic ties, and they should have the option to access information about the donor and their family medical history. The Colorado law achieves this without prioritizing genetic ties.

USDCC supports modernizing parentage laws to protect LGBTQ families, particularly the rights of non-biological parents. USDCC has heard from many LGBTQ families who have been harmed by industry practices, including anonymity and large sibling groups, and who want legislative reforms.

USDCC will continue to pursue public education, industry outreach, and legislation to address such harmful practices. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with COLAGE and other LGBTQ organizations.
